What is the Best Way to Floss?

The best way to maintain your overall oral health at home is by keeping a strict regimen of brushing, using mouthwash, and flossing.  Most people remember to brush their teeth and use their mouthwash, but many have stopped flossing because they simply don’t understand how to do it correctly.  This is potentially dangerous, because flossing is the best (and only) way to remove the plaque and tartar that has built up between the teeth.  If left alone, this buildup with create bacteria that later attacks the teeth and gums.

In order to help you floss correctly, our Beverly Hills dentist, Dr. Javdan has provided the following tips:

  • Use floss made of nylon or plastic that is thick enough to get between your teeth without causing pain.
  • Each time you floss, you should use about 1 ½ feet of floss.
  • When flossing, wrap the floss around two fingers until there is only 2 inches visible.
  • Floss between each set of teeth.
  • Do NOT cut into your gums.
  • After flossing, immediately use mouthwash.
